School Aims and Values

These are our school aims and values. They are important to us. These were developed by the children, parents, staff and governors through various meetings, lessons and school assemblies. They set out what we are trying to achieve together as a school community and how we want to achieve this.

Our Aims

At St Matthew’s we aim to…

  • …make our learning inspiring, challenging and fun

  • …achieve our best

  • …celebrate success

  • …treat ourselves and others with respect

  • …take responsibility for our learning, behavior and our school

This will make our school a happy and safe place to be.

Our Values

In St. Matthew’s…

  • …we value working hard and trying our best;

  • …we celebrate our successes and learn from our mistakes;

  • …we value our diversity and individuality;

  • …we treasure our friendships and other relationships;

  • …we respect independence and team work;

  • …we encourage participation and everyone’s voice is listened to.

  • …we take pride in our work, our school and our community.

Values for "Values Awareness"

We also teach the children about certain "character values".  We call this work "values for values awareness".

Below you can see the list of values that we teach for this work.  The list is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all the values that we would seek to promote.  The list of course includes certain values that we believe are conducive to leading a positive and fulfilling life as an individual and as a member of a community.  However, the key to achieving this is being aware of the values one holds and using these to guide and support oneself and shape one’s behaviour, both on a day to day basis and in one’s long term decisions and choices.

The ultimate aim of teaching these values is for children to be able to think about, question, revise and apply their own values to their lives.  Teaching about these values (and others) aims to create in children an awareness that values are choices that we make as individuals and to support them to be conscious of this as they make decisions in our lives.
